Head of Product Development

Description:

The Head of Product Development will be based out of mPortal’s Bangalore office and report to the company CTO. This is a key leadership role and involves working closely with other functional leaders including heads of product management and marketing. The person will be responsible for managing the creation of robust next-generation carrier-grade mobile content delivery platforms and compelling mobile handset software products that will help expand and enrich mPortal’s existing product portfolio.

The Head of Product Development is expected to:

  • Be accountable for high-quality software product deliveries from mPortal India.
  • Lead a team of 40+ software architects, developers, performance engineers and testers and manage the entire lifecycle of software products.
  • Responsible for product architecture; identify and drive team to implement architectural improvements.
  • Manage software team recruitment activities and realize appropriate mix of development talent required to meet engineering/business goals.
  • Mentor and manage staff to keep energized, inspired and productive.
  • Implement effective training programs for software team members.
  • Define, implement and oversee all required processes, methods and systems to ensure development meets engineering/business goals.
  • Ensure that all teams have adequate direction/assignments on a daily basis, and are efficiently and effectively performing assignments according to agreed upon goals and schedules.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • A degree in Computer Science or equivalent from a recognized educational institution.
  • Good understanding of off-shore software development model.
  • 10+ years of software development experience, including hands-on J2EE application architecture and design. Good exposure to mobile technologies a strong plus.
  • Good understanding of SaaS framework.
  • 5+ years of people management experience across the full lifecycle of software development.
  • Demonstrated experience working with business and product management to create technology solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams to architect and deliver carrier-grade J2EE platforms for scalability and performance.
  • Experience in architecting systems for high availability meeting stringent client SLAs.
  • Proven success using and driving repeatable, iterative software development methodologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills.
  • Proven success using and driving repeatable, iterative software development methodologies.
  • Proven success using open-source technologies and have the ability to work with several J2EE open source frameworks.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with telecom carriers a strong plus.
